CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
At first, Katie thought she would leave the animals with the sled. After she unharnessed Buck, though, both animals followed her. Katie didnât know if there was a command to tell a bear to stay. Oh well, handy to have Fluffy around if she confronted another bear.
It was faster to travel in the sled, but she was anxious, and the walk would do her good. It looked about a few miles from her observation point outside the fence. With every scrap of vegetation on the Clear Air Force Base Station side of the fence removed, it enabled her to see for miles. The walk would have been easy on that side of the fence but too exposed.
She followed a barely visible trail cut in the brush, but it could have just been a game trail in the forest. She occasionally drifted close to the fence line to get her bearings. She figured sheâd covered a few miles in the brushy forest and knew the area that would probably contain another door to the second tunnel was nearby.
âYou looking for someone?â
Katie nearly screamed. A man with a long white beard, dressed somewhat like an Eskimo in a parka and boots that seemed to be some native attire, stood in the trail ahead.
âHey Buck, see you brought a newcomer.â He eyed Fluffy cautiously, who seemed not to notice.
Buck wagged his tail. Katie realized this man could be part of Lynxâs cryptic message.
âI donât know who or what Iâm looking for. Iâm Katie, and since you know Buck and Fluffy, am I correct in assuming you also know Lynx?â
âLynx and I are well acquainted. My name is Noah MacFly. But out here, they call me âthe little white one who walks a lot.â Which is the Inuit word for fox.â
âLynx left me to go into the Air Station through a tunnel about two miles back. He drew a map with an arrow indicating I should follow the west and north trail, which is here. I can only assume he wanted me to find you?â
âSounds like him. Come on, then. I got coffee.â
Katie would follow anyone who had coffee. Noah looked like the biblical character with his long white beard. Who would believe she found a barista in the wilds of remote Alaska?
A tiny hut appeared ahead, built partially into a small hill. Smoke puffed almost invisibly from a smokestack that wafted up to disappear into the trees. Katie entered the shack to see the bare minimum of a bunk, a table with one chair, and a wood stove. One wall was a bookshelf holding about a hundred books. A teapot sat boiling slightly on the wood stove. MacFly pulled a French press from a shelf and filled it with coffee and steaming water. Katie was glad to see he owned more than one mug. He took the second one from the shelf, shook out the dust, and poured her a cup of coffee.
âDo you know why Lynx would have sent me this way?â
âYep.
